East Cowes Children's Centre

A 223.3m2 ‘Sure Start’ Children’s Centre is set on a site to the rear of Osborne Middle School with facilities for family learning and training.

As the work of the Centre is to support children and their families to achieve a positive future the design reflects this optimism with contemporary lines, clean white render sitting atop of a low but well defined brick plinth visually grounding the building on a secure foundation. The importance of energy efficiency, natural lighting and ventilation were keen design considerations and led to the use of underfloor heating fed by a very efficient air source heat pump and 3 large roof lights were included over the internal circulation corridor to provide both excellent levels of natural light and fresh air/ventilation. The high ceilings and large areas of glazing give plenty of natural light internally and the oversized coloured pencil bench in the play area and ruler near the entrance give a relaxed approachable feel to the outside of the Centre.
